Mixing in Stars and the Evolution of the 3he Abundance

چکیده

We first recall the observational and theoretical facts that constitute the so-called He problem. We then review the chemical anomalies that could be related to the destruction of He in red giants stars. We show how a simple consistent mechanism can lead to the destruction of He in low mass stars and simultaneously account for the low C/C ratios and low lithium abundances observed in giant stars of different populations. This process should both naturally account for the recent measurements of He/H in galactic HII regions and allow for high values of He observed in some planetary nebulae. We propose a simple statistical estimation of the fraction of stars that may be affected by this process.

Evolution of D and 3 He in the Galaxy

The predictions of Galactic chemical evolution models for D and 3He are described in connection with those on the other Galactic quantities for which observational constraints are available. Models in agreement with the largest set of data predict deuterium depletions from the Big Bang to the present epoch smaller than a factor of 3 and do not allow for D/H primordial abundances larger than ∼ 4...

Comment on "Deep mixing of 3He: reconciling Big Bang and stellar nucleosynthesis".

Eggleton et al. (Reports, 8 December 2006, p. 1580) reported on a deep-mixing mechanism in low-mass stars caused by a Rayleigh-Taylor instability that destroys all of the helium isotope 3He produced during the star's lifetime. Observations of 3He in planetary nebulae, however, indicate that some stars produce prodigious amounts of 3He. This is inconsistent with the claim that all low-mass stars...

Measurements of 12C/13C in planetary nebulae: Implications on stellar and Galactic chemical evolution

We present the results of a study aimed at determining the 12C/13C ratio in two samples of planetary nebulae (PNe) by means of millimeter wave observations of 12CO and 13CO. The first group includes six PNe which have been observed in the 3He+ hyperfine transition by Balser et al. (1997); the other group consists of 22 nebulae with rich molecular envelopes. We have determined the carbon isotopi...

Presupernova Evolution of Rotating Massive Stars II: Evolution of the Surface Properties

We investigate the evolution of the surface properties of models for rotating massive stars, i.e., their luminosities, effective temperatures, surface rotational velocities, and surface abundances of all isotopes, from the zero age main sequence to the supernova stage. Our results are based on the grid of stellar models by Heger et al. (2000), which covers solar metallicity stars in the initial...

Evolution and surface abundances of red giants experiencing deep mixing

We have calculated the evolution of low metallicity red giant stars under the assumption of deep mixing between the convective envelope and the hydrogen burning shell. We find that the extent of the observed abundance anomalies, and in particular the universal O-Na anticorrelation, can be totally explained by mixing which does not lead to significant helium enrichment of the envelope. On the ot...
